The Implementing New Knowledge Environments (INKE) project seeks a post-doctoral fellow in digital humanities with expertise in information management. This position is based in the Electronic Textual Cultures Lab at the University of Victoria. The successful candidate will work closely with team members at U Victoria, the Digital Humanities Observatory, U Toronto, U Montreal, Nipissing U, U Alberta, McMaster U, and beyond.

The postdoctoral fellow will work with production-focused and experimental corpora, datastores, and analytical technologies, collaborating with those associated with INKE's information management team and others, consulting with project stakeholders and potential stakeholders, and liaising with other INKE researchers located in North America and the UK.

The successful candidate will have skills and aptitudes in humanities-oriented research, corpora, datastores, and computational analysis tools, including training or demonstrated experience working with a variety of digital humanities resources, including digital archives, scholarly editions, journals and monographs, and text analysis and visualization tools. Organizational skills are essential. Interest and aptitude in research planning and management would be an asset. The ability to work in concert with our existing team is a critical requirement.

Examples of technologies employed in related INKE projects are as follows: TEI P5; XML, XSLT, XSL and XHTML encoding; XQuery; eXist XML databases; JavaScript; Ruby on Rails; PHP; CSS; and web-based SQL database projects using PostgresSQL and mySQL. Experience in some or all of these areas and similar areas would be an asset, but is not a requirement, though aptitude with digital tools is required.

Our current team members pride themselves on a passionate interest in both the humanities and their computational engagement. Our ideal candidate is someone with similar passions who can introduce the team to new ideas and provide new perspectives on existing digital humanities issues.

The salary for this position is competitive in the Canadian context, and is governed in part by SSHRC practices. A  special issue of the review Defense from the IHEDN has been recently published (n°140, Juillet-Aout, 2009), this special issue deals with the immaterial economy. The Impact of Information Technology on Scientists' Productivity, Quality and Collaboration Patterns

"This study advances the prior literature concerning the impact of information technology on productivity in academe in two important ways. First, it utilizes a dataset that combines information on the diffusion of two noteworthy and early innovations in IT -- BITNET and the Domain Name System (DNS) -- with career history data on research-active life scientists. This research design allows for proper identification of the availability of access to IT as well as a means to directly identify causal effects. Second, the fine-grained nature of the data set allows for an investigation of three publishing outcomes: counts, quality, and co-authorship. Our analysis of a random sample of 3,771 research-active life scientists from 430 U.S. institutions over a 25-year period supports the hypothesis of a differential return to IT across subgroups of the scientific labor force. Women scientists, early-to-mid-career scientists, and those employed by mid-to-lower-tier institutions benefit from access to IT in terms of overall research output and an increase in the number of new co-authors they work with. Early-career scientists and those in top-tier institutions gain in terms of research quality when IT becomes available at their campuses."

rentreeNous vous annoncions, dans notre dernier billet en date du 23 juillet 2009, la fermeture physique des bibliothèques de l'Université de Provence pour un mois (même si plusieurs services virtuels restaient opérationnels).

Le temps passe vite ! Nous sommes le 24 août 2009 et depuis ce matin 9h00, la bibliothèque LSH d'Aix, la bibliothèque de Marseille Saint-Charles et les bibliothèques de l'IUFM ont rouvert leurs portes.

La bibliothèque de l'IMT Château-Gombert, quant à elle, rouvrira ses portes le 1er septembre 2009 à 9h00.

Nous espérons que vous avez passé d'agréables vacances (même si pour beaucoup d'entre vous elles ne sont encore pas finies ;-) et nous vous promettons une année universitaire très riche en événements, que ce blog égrénera avec toujours autant de plaisir !

Le code est poésie paraît-il [1].

Mais est-ce que cela marche en sens inverse ? Autrement dit : peut-on traduire la poésie en lignes de code informatique ?

Il semblerait que la réponse soit oui. Et je ne parle pas ici de bits ni de code binaire avec des 1 et des 0, mais de vraies lignes de code telles que les webmasters les connaissent bien, qu'il s'agisse de PHP ou de JavaScript pour les plus connues.

Né il y a quelque temps sur Twitter, le mouvement Songsincode se répand comme une traînée de poudre auprès des codeurs, qui mettent en équation les chansons les plus connues, démontrant au passage l'implacable logique des textes de ritournelles d'apparence aussi anodines que I Shot The Sherif ou encore Bohemian Rhapsody.

Le résultat est étonnant et souvent très drôle, même s'il ne parlera pas beaucoup à ceux qui n'ont aucune notion de programmation informatique.

We are looking to hire an R&D Developer in our Oxford offices. We are look for somebody who:

  • Is passionate about creating tools for online scholarly communication.
  • Relishes working with metadata.
  • Has experience delivering web-based applications using agile methodologies.
  • Wants to learn new skills and work with a variety of programming languages.
  • Enjoys working with a small, geographically dispersed team.
  • Groks mixed-content model XML.
  • Groks RDF.
  • Groks REST.
  • Has explored MapReduce-based database systems.
  • Is expert in one or more popular development language (Java, C, C++, C#).
  • Is expert in one or more popular scripting language (Ruby, Python, Javascript).
  • Has deployed and maintained Linux/BSD-based systems.
  • Understands relational databases (MySQL, Postgres, Oracle).
  • Tests first.
